Welcome to Estrepreneur, a podcast for entrepreneurs and leaders doing business and life God's way. Each week, we discuss biblical and finances. Listen along as I speak with special guests on how to thrive in all aspects of life. Hi, I'm Edna. Like many of you, I wear many hats. I'm a military wife, mother, author, certified John Maxwell business and executive coach, trainer, and founder of Favor and Wealth where we help the good guys win. So tune in as we bring on the light. Well, hello, everyone.
Edna Harding [00:00:48]:
Good morning. Good afternoon. Good evening. Thank you for tuning in for another episode of the Entrepreneur Podcast. My name is Edna Harding, and I am sorry. Something stuck in my throat. I am so excited to talk to you about this particular topic on Love Day or on Valentine's Day for those in The US. I believe it's only The US that celebrates this.
Edna Harding [00:01:13]:
I know this is very commercialized, but I thought I'd make fun of the occasion, not make fun, but make light of the occasion and talk about a topic that I think it's going to stimulate your brain. So today's topic is called marketing from the heart. What is the kingdom way to attract and serve? Okay? So if you guys are ready, let's tune in. So for those of you guys who are new, I just wanted to say that this podcast is all about biblical wisdom and business coming together to create kingdom impact. Now why didn't I say faith? Because everyone can say faith. Right? Everyone has different types of faith. But to me, I wanna be very clear that the wisdom that I share on this podcast is confirmed through the scriptures, confirmed through the Bible. It's not through theory, it's not through word-of-mouth, it's through the Bible, which I believe is what coming from the spirit of God who inspired these men to write.
Edna Harding [00:02:22]:
Now I understand there's some logic and pushback, behind that saying, well, these are still men who are writing it, But I truly believe what the word of God says that these words that were put into these manuscripts came from the heart of God, came from the spirit of God. But that is not my job to prove that's between you and God. So anyways, I wanted to welcome you all those who are new and those from all over the world who are listening in. I'm so excited that, the reach is growing. So please continue to share with your family and friends and share even to your enemies. I don't care. Just get the kingdom message out. I don't have any type of advertising, so, really, my advertising is through word-of-mouth.
Edna Harding [00:03:11]:
And anytime you subscribe, anytime we share, anytime you comment or, review, anything that I do, that really helps me, increase, the message that God put in my spirit. Okay? Because it's all about souls, my friends. Okay? So let's go ahead and get into it. That was a very long introduction, but I feel like there are gonna be a lot of you guys who have never heard me before. You know, when you're so let me just put it this way. So every morning before I record, I always, you know, pray in the spirit. I always ask God, okay. You know, what do you want me to share today? And I ask almost in his heart, and he gives me a little taste of who's gonna be listening.
Edna Harding [00:03:52]:
And I truly believe there's gonna be a lot of new new folks, which is why I had to do a little longer introduction than usual. All right. But welcome. Okay. So let's go back to our topic. I want you to really be real about this whole thing. Okay? So much of today's marketing feels what? What do they feel? Manipulative, automated, and soulless. How many of you guys noticed that a lot of today's marketing is what? Manipulative, like the fear of missing out, pressure, pressure, pressure, that type of stuff.
Edna Harding [00:04:25]:
Automated where it's not even now you're talk you're dealing with a robot. Right? They personalize it by changing your name. Heck, I do that too, you know, but not for, like, getting to know my clients. I do it after I've gotten to know the client already or potential prospect, and then I put them into the nurturing sequence. But I don't do that right away. I do that after I've spent at least twenty, thirty minutes with individuals getting to know their heart, getting to know what's the challenges are and then go from there. So think about it, right? So the pressure tactics, for example, the clickbait, the act now or you'll miss out scarcity mindset, these are all things that a lot of the world teaches. But what if I told you that your greatest marketing advantage isn't your strategy at all? What, Edna? Yeah.
Edna Harding [00:05:19]:
It's actually in your spirit. So today, we're gonna be covering, biblical marketing principles that shift the way you attract and serve clients. So if you've been feeling like marketing is a struggle, or if you felt like, you know, you're misaligned with your values, like you feel like you're doing, like, what seems like it's grieving your spirit, for example, or you're just exhausted, I want you to stay with me because this episode is for you. So let's go ahead and dive into it. Let's talk about first what is wrong with modern marketing. Okay? What is the heart problem? What is the real issue? Right? And I can tell you this, that majority of it, the standard world systems marketing is built on what? Manipulation, which is masked at as as like persuasion. Oh, you're not manipulating. You're just persuading.
Edna Harding [00:06:17]:
Baloney. It's still manipulation. Number two, pressure disguise as urgency. If you don't buy now, you know, you're gonna lose it. You know, it's so funny when I do these things, let's say if I am like, okay, if you don't buy within the next ninety days, it's not like if you don't buy within the next, minute or the next thirty seconds or the next week or the next two days. Like, that's majority of the tactics. Right? But with me, if you you currently work with me or you have worked me in the past, I always say, okay. I quoted you last year.
Edna Harding [00:06:50]:
I'll still honor you, this year if you sign up. Like, I don't, like, change my pricing because your finances aren't there yet. You know, you shouldn't penalize people for the financial situation. You should federal penalize them for inaction if they have the finances, which is why you still have to put a little fire in there. But it's not to the point where you're pressuring them, where they're being pressured to hire you instead of following peace. Does that make sense? What is another thing what's another thing that's wrong with modern marketing? It's metrics over meaning. It's all about metrics. Right? Or algorithms over authenticity.
Edna Harding [00:07:30]:
Let me comment on 500 posts so I could beat the algorithm. Okay? Yes. I get it. I understand you wanna get your message out and you wanna work with, technology, but it has to be authentic too. I always tell my clients, like, you shouldn't just depend on chat GPT or AI to, you know, write everything for you or make you have to do the thinking first and then use ChatGPT to make what you're thinking professional because you could tell. Because a lot of times, like, for example, if I had a client that did an assignment and they send it to me and I'm like, okay. What does this mean? And they don't know because they use chat GPT to do a thinking for them. See, that's the thing.
Edna Harding [00:08:10]:
It's like when you solely depend on AI, so artificial intelligence, to do your thinking for you, to come up with everything without you including your thoughts, your God given thoughts in it, you are not gonna get it. And you're not gonna be successful because you need your creativity that God has given you for your for your specific assignment to operate so that you could create something completely masterful. Alright? So I wanted to share a little story. So I recently had a conversation with someone. Let's call her Jessica. And she came to me exhausted. Okay? She, you you know, was spending thousands of dollars on ads, following all the expert strategies and getting leads, but then they had no loyalty. Meaning, they had a lot of potential clients, but no real connection.
Edna Harding [00:09:04]:
So and then she told me she told me this, and I'll never forget. She said, I'll feel like I'm constantly trying to convince people to buy instead of just really serve them. Right? How many of you guys are feeling like this is becoming more of a task than a joy? Oh, come on, son. Come on, Jesus. Preach to us. How many of you guys feel that your sales calls are becoming more of, I'm gonna pressure you. I'm gonna convince you to buy instead of truly serve them with your knowledge, with your gifting, with your solution, because you're not pressured to sell them. Right? Because you know that the end of the day, your gifts will make room for you.
Edna Harding [00:09:48]:
Oh, come on, Jesus. Oh, come on, Jesus. Does that sound familiar? K. Does that sound familiar? Because most marketing today is what transactional. It's not transformational. You're like, oh my gosh, you're using all these same, you know, words like transformational and transactional. Like I'm telling you, it's truly what it is. Because if marketing isn't so so just let me just back up.
Edna Harding [00:10:15]:
Remember that marketing isn't about forcing sales. Okay? It's truly about serving hearts. You're like, What? Now you lost me, Edna. Oh, I'm glad I lost you because we're gonna dive in. Okay. I'm gonna give you guys example. So look at how Jesus marketed his message. K? What did he do? He didn't use manipulation.
Edna Harding [00:10:36]:
He didn't create false urgency. What did he do? Instead, he met people where they were. He spoke their language. He addressed real needs and he created lasting transformation. So for example, take the woman at the well. He didn't pressure her into following him. Right? What did he do? He connected with her, spoke directly to her pain and then invited her into something greater. Okay.
Edna Harding [00:11:01]:
Remember the woman at the well, the Samaritan, is it the Samaritan? Well, yeah, it's Samaritan woman at the well. Okay? Now let's look at Solomon as another example. The wisest businessman who ever lived. K? Proverbs, by the way, guys, if you're new to this whole Christian faith thing, I want you to read Proverbs because Proverbs is full of wisdom about how to communicate, how to build trust, and how to create lasting impact. Okay? So back to my point, his principles, if you read throughout Proverbs, reminds us that the main thing is integrity and wisdom. That is the foundation of influence. If you operate in integrity and you operate in wisdom, right, people are gonna buy from you. You're gonna influence people utilizing your gifts and your character to buy from you, not through your words.
Edna Harding [00:11:57]:
Oh my gosh. Hear me, Jesus. Him hear me, Jesus. Hear me, people. I mean, I hear you, Jesus. Hear me, people. When you operate integrity and you showcase the god kind wisdom, the wisdom that does not come from the earth, but come from heavenly places, you are going to influence the sale for the better, because you're not gonna have to convince them to buy from you. They're convincing you to take them as a client.
Edna Harding [00:12:27]:
I'm not even joking. This happens to be over and over again, where a client will remind me, hey. You forgot to send me the invoice. Hey. You didn't send me the contract. Hey. This and that. I was like, it's on my list.
Edna Harding [00:12:39]:
Right? I know it sounds so, like, egotistical. It sounds like you're bragging. I'm not bragging. I'm trying to share the secret sauce. If you wanna increase your sale, you gotta get this key. Operate integrity always. Utilize your gifting. Serve them well.
Edna Harding [00:12:57]:
Serve your clients and potential prospects well. And ask for wisdom from heavenly places, and I promise you the sales will come. You don't have to beg for it. It will come. Okay? Because when you apply these biblical truths to marketing, everything shifts. Let me let me get let me give you an example. So you go from, for example, convincing to connecting. Then you go from pressuring to positioning.
Edna Harding [00:13:25]:
And then you also go from chasing to attracting. You know? I remember I hired, you know, someone. I don't wanna mention names. And they said you're gonna attract clients attract clients. But then they were using the same exact tactics as everyone and their mamas that they're teaching out there. Did I attract clients? No. Because you blend in with everybody else. If you don't have a different tactic, which is why God always tells us you're in the world, but you're not of the world.
Edna Harding [00:13:56]:
So you truly have to operate in a different system, and that includes marketing. So let me give you guys a heart centered framework called the grace method. Okay? Because the grace method is, again, it's a approach to attract and serve clients utilizing biblical strategies. So let's start with number one. Grace, letter g. G stands for genuine connection. I want you to listen before speaking. K? Listen before speaking.
Edna Harding [00:14:34]:
And I know that is really hard, especially if you're in sales because they teach you what to speak a lot. Tell them your value. Okay? You wanna understand pain points. You want to build real relationships. Right? You genuinely care about them. You're not there for the money. So for example, I remember I had a client who was working with me, and then life happens. She was with me for a year, and life happens, and she had to take care of some financial situation.
Edna Harding [00:15:07]:
And she asked me a question after after the contract was over, and she told me she was like, I didn't think you would respond. I was like, why would I not respond? Because I'm no I I basically, you know, I'm not working with you anymore. I was like, so what does that have to do with me responding? I'm still Edna. Right? So she's like, wow. She was really impressed. And that's so sad that people are impressed that people will still treat you different say the same as if they were paying you. Obviously, I don't give free consulting, but quick questions, you know, if it's gonna help them, if she asking for a prayer or whatever, I respond. Right.
Edna Harding [00:15:42]:
And if, and if I could ask it quick, ask her it quickly, I'll respond. But other than that, I mean, that is so sad, but that should be like a norm for Christians, but it's not, They operate like the world does where, oh, you're no longer paying me. Okay. Bye. Bye, Felicia. I'm no longer with you. I'm no longer your friend. Right? That it that is not godly.
Edna Harding [00:16:04]:
Okay? Number two, respectful engagement. You wanna honor boundaries. You wanna value people's time and you wanna appreciate their choice, not pressure them into action. Okay? So for example, if someone decides to work with someone else, maybe someone more expensive or even someone who's cheaper because I've seen both. Right? Because of perception, I'm not gonna treat them anything differently because they made a different choice. Because, you know, a lot of I mean, I've had people come back to me like, oh my gosh. I should have spent that much money. I should have just went with you and so forth, or I shouldn't have spent that little.
Edna Harding [00:16:40]:
I should have just went with you, for example. Like, regardless of what they decide, you have to appreciate their choice, and you shouldn't pressure them. Because what is what does a marketing and sales tactic teach you? You know, handle the objection. And what is how do you handle objections? Well, you know, what will happen if blah blah blah blah? And it's so funny because a lot of these tactics that they do now is the same thing that I've learned from eighteen, twenty years ago when I was still in college. Because I was in the number one sales program in the country, and nothing has changed. They're just calling it different terms, but it's the same exact thing. The truth of the matter is you don't want people to have buyer's remorse. And in order for you to prevent that, you need to ensure that they're operating in what? In a decision based on peace, not pressure.
Edna Harding [00:17:27]:
K? So r is respectful engagement. A is authentic communication. You wanna share real stories. You wanna be transparent. You wanna show the good, the bad, and the ugly. Don't just show them the good stuff. Say, okay, this is where we're really good at, but this is an area that we are still facing challenges. The more honest you are, the more transparent you are, the better.
Edna Harding [00:17:50]:
So for example, I always let my clients know, hey, I have I'm a mom of young children. I am a military wife, and sometimes my husband is out of the, you know, out of state or out of the country. I have I I you have to be flexible with me. You know, if I have to cancel my appointment because I have kids at home because it's a snow day, like they have to be okay with that. And I think the more transparent you are with your clients with your limitations. So that's currently my limitations. To me, it's a blessing, but it's the limitations when it comes to those who wants access to me all the time, like talking to me in the evening times, or I have to set these boundaries saying, Hey, if this is not an emergency, don't message me, wait till tomorrow. Right.
Edna Harding [00:18:34]:
Or schedule a VIP call with me, but you have to set this in place, but the more transparent you are, the more vulnerable you are. I show the good, the bad, and I'll go to my client. I can't tell you how many times I've cried in front of clients. Okay. And something about that, that I think makes me more real to them because I'm not always gonna be at a %. I'm not always gonna be, oh my gosh. I know I'm the best of the best. I always have it all figured out.
Edna Harding [00:19:00]:
Like, sometimes I have weaknesses. A lot of times I have weaknesses. Right? And there are times when I'm vulnerable, you know, like, I remember one time one of my clients messaged me. Well, I messaged my client about prayer, like, asking them what I can pray for them. And then they sent me a message saying, how can I pray for you? And And I was just I I was being honest. Like, well, I was currently challenged at that time, but but understand this guys that people connect with real, not perfect. So the more vulnerable you are, the more transparent you are, the more real you are with your, with your clients or your prospects, the more they're going to be willing to write a check to you because they know that you're real. They know that you're not fake, right? C is for consistent value.
Edna Harding [00:19:47]:
Okay. You want to nurture your audience consistently. Okay. What does that mean? Like minus through LinkedIn minus to my YouTube before minus to my social media, sometimes minus to phone calls, just regular conversations, newsletters. I have my podcast, things like that. Right? What are you doing to nurture your audience consistently? Right? So having some sort of nurturing sequence is important. This is something that I ask all my clients to do for their clients because you have to serve before you sell. Okay? If people don't feel like you value them or you add value to them, they're not gonna buy from you.
Edna Harding [00:20:21]:
So you might as well get into the habit of serving before you sell. Okay? And also one, thank you, holy spirit. I totally forgot. Like, I I served the churches with my giftings for many years. I'm talking about hundreds of entrepreneurs. Okay. And not only that, even through like ministries, business ministries that have business business, like CEOs, like prayer, or it could be teaching them what I know, like at free webinars, free workshops. Like, I did all of that for many years.
Edna Harding [00:20:54]:
But what did it do? It helped me showcase my gifting and helped me attract the right clientele because they like how I operate. But most importantly, I did what Jesus did before he offered what he had. He dealt with their pain. He served them by healing them, for example, from a sickness or feeding them, right? Those types of things. Because when you focus on the needs of your clients first, before yours, what happens is it becomes a domino effect. Right? So point what's my point? Teach, encourage, and give freely because remember to trust is built over time. It doesn't happen in instant. I don't care what many peep what, how think about this guys.
Edna Harding [00:21:45]:
There are so many marketing gurus and sales gurus who sell the program, the products at a webinar because they're like, okay, I'm building rapport. You're not building rapport. You're not building relationships. You're not building trust. What you're doing is you're using manipulation and fear of missing out to get them to buy from you. And at the end of the day, these people who bought because of pressure and who bought because of they got manipulated thinking that you were offering something that that, that was valuable when in reality, it was all smoke and mirrors. The truth will come out, and then you have people who are stuck in these long term relationships as far as financially, they're financially obligated to pay you for a year program that is not adding value to them all because what they fell for, what manipulation, right? And pressure. So as believers, both the ones who are selling the services, as well as buying the services, we really need to ask the sermon from the holy spirit and ask God, Lord, is this you? Is this your answer to a problem? Or am I providing a solution to this problem as specifically the holy spirit for his leaning and don't move until he said, yes, if you don't hear from him, that means it's a no.
Edna Harding [00:23:03]:
Okay. That means wait. So don't jump ahead of God's timing. Remember, I've learned the hard way more numerous times when I invested in things that I should have invested in, but God redeems time. And he, he made me learn as I'm educating him, teaching you guys to truly like, understand that never go off of manipulation, never go off of pressure, always follow peace, and always follow wisdom. Alright? Letter e, eternal perspective. Focus on transformation, not just transactions. I want you to build something that lasts.
Edna Harding [00:23:37]:
Okay. So impact over income. Right? I want you to think generationally. How will your business serve beyond today? Right? I'm thinking generationally. I'm not just thinking about me. I'm thinking I'm already thank you, holy spirit. I already have a program for young women, young, and then also elementary school and middle school. Have I released it yet? No.
Edna Harding [00:23:59]:
Because right now I'm working on the grown folks. But eventually when I hit all my goals, I want to be able to incorporate my programs in schools and teach them what I know at a very young age, because a lot of the problems that they will face in adulthood could have been prevented if they just knew better while they were, younger. Okay. So what am I saying guys? Marketing. Isn't just about getting clients. Okay. It's about serving people with excellence so that they experience true transformation. Okay.
Edna Harding [00:24:32]:
So I wanna give you guys an example. Let's call her Sarah. K? So I don't know why I keep calling Sarah. I think Sarah is just a easier name to remember. Or what's her name? Oh, let's call her Lin, Ming Li. So it doesn't sound like I'm always calling Sarah. Ming Li. Okay? So, you know, Ming Li was struggling in her business because she was copying what competitors do.
Edna Harding [00:24:55]:
K. I want you to think ask yourself, am I copying what competitors do? So what did she do? She felt inauthentic. She didn't feel like herself. She felt fake. She had a hard time converting leads, and there were a lot of refund requests. Why? Because they didn't feel fully served. Right? These were stuff that they bought before from other people, but it was only packaged in a different way. I can't tell you guys.
Edna Harding [00:25:20]:
So can we back up out of the story? So I bought so many licenses to sell different programs, Not because I wanted to sell them, but I wanted to know the world systems of the world. And mind you, I've spent thousands and thousands. I don't know. A lot of money. Yeah. We can't even decipher exactly how many because I lost track over the years. But it's all the same thing. And here I am spending 5,000 here, 10,000 here, 50,000 here, 12,000 here.
Edna Harding [00:25:50]:
I'm spending this like nothing, and it's the same exact thing. I'm like, I'm done spending all this money for the same exact thing. And so in my due, I'm paying for the license to sell them, but I don't sell it. I show to them. I I use those programs to help me teach the difference between the world and God's world systems and God systems when it comes to business. But if I believe that it's going against how the Bible teaches us how to sell or serve our clientele, I'm not gonna teach it. However, I will expose it. But my point is you don't wanna blend in with everybody else.
Edna Harding [00:26:27]:
You want to be you wanna stand out. And so this person, Ming Li, came to me looking for different way to market. So here's what we did. We identified her true identity, her true calling, and aligned her marketing with her mission. Okay. So what exactly she was called to do? Who was she called to serve? Like specific audience because you're not called to everybody. There's specific fish that God wants you to work with. Right? She stopped using pressure tactics.
Edna Harding [00:27:00]:
She started serving first. She developed her gut her, like, what I call her, guiding voice, if that makes sense, like your genuine voice. Now to sound like your boss, I did a training about this many, many years ago, I think, five or six years ago about using your genuine voice. And how do you know if it's your genuine voice? Basically, you should be talking so for example, if I'm selling, I should be talking to you the same way I would talk to a friend or a husband or talking to someone sharing, you know, like some really delicious food that I want them to try. Like your voice shouldn't squeak, your voice shouldn't sound anything different from what you would normally do when you're sharing a good idea or a new book or a new new, point. Like it should be the same. You become an authentic when you start sounding different from what you normally do when selling something. Okay? So that's just one example.
Edna Harding [00:27:56]:
So, share real stories, right, instead of scripted sales pitches that talk about your journey, talk about the people you've helped, talk about some of the challenges that you've encountered, things like that. Focus more on those type of stories, not like marketing type spiels. Right? And she created value first content, which was what? Educate, inspire, and lead people instead of sell them. Right? Let help them see solve it for themselves, utilizing the wisdom that you share with them. Right? They could try it before you buy, for example. So what were the results? Well, her revenue increase, obviously, her client retention great grew to 90%. She has lots of referrals because people now trusted her brand. And if most importantly, she was fulfilled because she was a marketing from the heart and not from stress.
Edna Harding [00:28:57]:
So she didn't just grow her business. She also grew her impact. So what am I saying? Is this possible for you? Absolutely. Absolutely. If you don't wanna hire me, that's cool. Just read your Bible and follow the strategies and how Jesus marketed his message and how he impact lives and all these other Bible, Bible believing men and women of God in the Bible, operated in their life and how they were able to influence others. Right? It it had nothing to do with marketing with the with the with what they're teaching you. Right? Nowadays, which is manipulation and pressure.
Edna Harding [00:29:37]:
I keep saying that because I truly believe a lot of people are operating or making decisions based on manipulation and pressure or like, you know, it's just, oh my gosh, I can tell you. I know all the typical questions they ask because, like I said, I've been at this for a very long time. K. I went to school for sales. K. In in February and how 02/2003. Yeah. 02/1934.
Edna Harding [00:30:04]:
I went to an entrepreneurship program, and I went through a sales program, the number one sales program in the country, and they give you all these tactics. K? Then I went to a bunch of other sales program outside outside of college that was done through my corporations that I was part of. And it was all the same tactics, just different terms. My point is, if you truly want to sell, you have to distinguish yourself from the other sales reps out there, from the other entrepreneurs out there selling the same products and services. You truly have to follow the guidelines in the Bible, and I promise you, it's gonna make a world of a difference. Okay? So So let's go ahead and close. Remember that marketing the kingdom way. Isn't about chasing customers.
Edna Harding [00:30:46]:
Okay. It's about serving them so well that they're drawn to you. Because when you market with grace, what happens? People feel seen clients trust you, and your business feels purposeful. Like you wanna get up and serve your clients because you absolutely love what we do. This is how we build businesses that last. So if today's episode spoke to you, I want to hear from you. K. Do you agree that love, service, and integrity should be the center of all marketing? If so, I want you to comment on my LinkedIn post or my podcast post, either on Facebook or Instagram or respond back on my website.
Edna Harding [00:31:28]:
